The history of music of Mithila

We find a definite source in the Karnat period when its ruler Nanyadev (1097-1133A.D.) had a keen interest in music. Though in the 7th-8th c. the Siddhacharyas' Charyapad mentions the Raga in which a particular couplet is to be sung. The couplets were based on lyrics, which followed the tradition of Bharata's 'Natya Sashtra'.
Nanyadev used to compose music himself and was himself a singer of high order .He classified and analyzed the Ragas and left a distinct mark on the development of music. He wrote a treaty on music'Saraswati Hridayalankar' which has been preserved in the Bhandarkar Research Institute of Pune, till the modern time. This is also called 'Bharat Bhasya'. He mentions a village -Gandhar where certain raga was evolved. He mentions about a particular Rag giving rise to a particular lyric: -"Kiyanto niyata ragalayesu pratipadita rasanurodhadanyepi raga karyamanisibhi." Nanyadev opines Madhya laya is chosen for Hasya (humorous) and sringar (libido) rasa, Bilambit is chosen for karun (compassion) rasa and Drut is chosen for veer (brave), Rodra (anger), Adbhut (marvelous) and Bhayanak (fearful) rasas.
Maharaja Shubhankar (1516-1607 A.D.) of Kharoure mul (dynasty) wrote another important book Sri Hastamuktavali that deals with a companion art of dance.
Jyotirishwar Thakur (14th c.) the minister of Maharaja Harisinghdev, the last king of Karnatas, was also a singer, describes in his encyclopedic work 'Varnaratnakar' the term Vidyavant as a Kalavant.According to Dr. Suniti Kumar chatterji, the editor of 'Varnaratnakar', a vidyavant used to be professional singers and teacher of music. His rank was that of highly posted Bhat.Jyotiriswar has described fourteen types of defects in a song and seven types of defects in singing. He has mentioned many ragas which are prevalent even now as for example: -koushik, bhairbi, hindol, ramkali, sri, dipak, gujari, dhamachi, malar, desakhi, vasant, kamod, gour, karnat, bangla, mansai, mulki, varati, toki, patmanjari, khambabati, gandhar, pancham and nritya. Here he describes various types of dances, musical instruments like various Mridangas and Veenas, metric prosody to obtain different tunes and rhythms.
The renowned exponent of Mithila music Lochan kavi, who wrote 'Ragatarangini' has also described the first fourteen ragas described by Jyotiriswar mentioned above in addition he describes: -lalit bivas, ahirani, gopidattal, kodar (kedar), aswar (asavari) bhupali and raj-vijay.
Raja Shivasingh of oiniwar dynasty, the patron of Mahakavi Vidyapati, had a courtier, Jayat by name, he was a great singer and he used to sing the songs of Vidyapati in various ragas and talas, which has been mentioned by Lochan in Ragatarangini.This book was written during Muslim period and mentions the foreign ragas like yaman and fardost. It shows the impact of Muslim music on the maithil music. Lochan propounded new system of raga-ragini and this became the pioneer work for the music of later period.
Here a glance on the Ragatarangini will not be out of context. There are five "taranga" (chapters) in this book. The first taranga deals with the form of a Raga. The second one deals with the Raginis.The third chapter deals with their origin, examination of Nada. We also find here the usual raga, lyric tala and rhetorics used in Tirhut desh. The fourth chapter deals with description of Sankirna ragas usually sung in Tirhut desh. In the fifth chapter the author deals with the voices, Veenas, audition, the institution of ragas, period of the day and night when a particular raga is to be sung and at last he describes the type of Nayikas (heroine). Lochan, following the theory of Hanumat School, has described six ragas and thirty raginis in toto.

He has described Khambhati and for the first time Adana raga. According to him some of the Sankirna Ragas are only prevalent in Mithila.
There is no doubt that barring aside the treaties on music of Karnat period the Ragatarangini is the best book amongst all treaties available on music in north India.
Maithil musicians were called up in the court of kings of Nepal, Bengal and Madhyadesh (U.P.) Jagaddhar (1414-75A.D.) the maithil translator of 'Malati Madhab' wrote 'Sangit-Sarbaswa' the manuscript on music has been well preserved in Nepal.
The kings of Darbhanga, Banaili and Bettiah were fond of music and patronized musicians of high order. Some of them were themselves good musicians.
Dhrupad was well developed by the Mallik gharana of Bettiah and Darbhanga.The rare and incomparable composition of Khandar Vani and Seniya traditions have been preserved by the Mallik singers of Amata (Darbhanga) and Bettiah even in the modern times in the original form.

This is a festival especially celebrated in mithila. mithilanchal dedicates this festival to the celebration of the brother sister relationship. It represents the tradition of this land as well as the art of making idols. This festival starts with the welcoming of the pair of birds sama-chakeva. Girls make clay idols of various birds and decorate them in their own traditional ways. Various rituals are performed and the festival joyfully ended with the ‘vidai’ of sama and with a wish that these birds return to this land the next year.

Almost all civilizations have worshipped the ‘sun god’..But it has a unique form in Bihar. Chatt Puja is the only occasion where the setting sun is worshipped.

The people of Bihar have immense faith in this festival. It is celebrated twice a year. Once in ‘Chaitra’ (according to the Hindu calendar) which falls in March and in ‘Kartik ‘ which falls in November. For this 4-day festival, people maintain sanctity and purity from even a month ahead. People celebrate this festival with immense faith the folk songs sung in the honour of ‘Surya Dev’ and ‘Chatti Maiyya’ can be heard at every nook and corner the sweetness of the songs lets you feel the holiness of the festival. The Chhath festival, celebrated by the people of this ancient capital of the Mithila region, has been a cultural convergence of both the Maithili-speaking people and the people migrated here from hill areas. Janakpur is believed to be the capital of the legendary king Janak, the foster father of Sita, who was married to Lord Ramchandra from Ayodhya in India. People of the Mithila region are of the opinion that the Chhath festival, also known as Surya Pooja (worshipping the sun) has been described in the Rig Veda, which is believed to be the oldest text available in the world. Chhath emerged as a traditional festival after Draupadi, wife of the Pandavas, began worshipping the sun during their one-year disguise in the palace of king Birat. People believe that worshipping the sun would help cure the disease like leprosy and bring about prosperity and longevity to their family members. Local people say that the festival has become more important after migrants from the hills also adopted it as their own cultural asset. Women of the Mithila region were busy in purchasing varieties of articles to offer to the sun god. The Chhath festival is marked for four days. Men and women prepare special dishes made up of special rice and molasses and taste them after an audience of the moon. They took a dip in Ganga Sagar and Dhanush Sagar, the famous lakes of the area. During the four-day-festival, the devotees worship the rising and setting sun.

Women fast for the good of their family and the society. Regardless of the social status, to celebrate this festival only the faith counts. Though it is a festival of the Hindus, some of the Muslims also participate actively in the puja.

The full moon day of Magh (Jan-Feb) is known as Maghi Poornima. It is a great bathing day and is as important as Karthik Poornima. The dead ancestors are offered libations, and the poor are given clothes, food, money, etc. Then Brahmans are fed and given "Daan- Dakshina" according to one's means. On this day great bathing festivals are held at various places along the banks of the holy rivers like the Ganges, Yamuna, Sarayu, Narmada, Tapti, Kaveri, Krishna, etc. A bath in the sea at Kanyakumari or Rameswaram or Puskhar or at the sacred tank in Kumbakonam is considered to be very meritorious. The Magh Mela at Prayag near Allahabad held on this day is very famous in India. More than a million devotees assemble at the confluence of the Ganges and the Yamuna and earn merit.

Vasant is said to be the prince of all seasons, when the whole nature swoons in ecstasy. So the ancient Hindu calendar started with this season. Vasant Panchami or Sri Panchami is celebrated on the fifth day of Magha (Jan- Feb). This day is specially dedicated to Saraswati, the Goddess of learning, wisdom, and fine arts. On this day, robes, yellow in color are traditionally worn, taking clue from the fields wearing a mustard flowers' brilliant color. This color also signifies maturity and ripeness. The "Prasadam" for the Goddess varies from community to community. Some have "Ber"- a kind of plume that is found in abundance in North India, and "Sangari"- a kind of bean that grows in the root of the radish plant are offered as prasadams. Along with these two, some "Burfi" sweets, which are yellow in color and marigolds, are placed on a "Thali" in front of the deity. The younger girl of the family normally begins the worship. Goddess Saraswati is selected for worship on this day since she is a female deity free from any negative attributes and also appears very graceful. Since she is associated with fine arts, music concerts and poetic symposiums are held on this day all over the country. Vasant Panchami is rarely held as a holiday now in India. When it was taken as a holiday long before, kite -flying was followed in almost all the households of north India.

Narak Nivaran Chturdasi day falls on the fourth day of the dark half of Magha (Jan- Feb). On this day "Vrata" is observed in the honor of Lord Ganesh and it ensures wisdom, trouble-free life and prosperity. After the early morning bath and observance of the routine piety rituals, a pitcher and Ganesh idol are installed and worshipped with sweets and balls made of jaggery and sesame seeds. Moon-god and Rohini are also worshipped. At night, after the moonrise, the fast is broken after offering the moon, the sacred wate r called "Arghya". It has a related legend which claims that it was the great sage Markandeya who advised a dethroned king to keep fast on this day to regain his lost glory. He did so and everything was well for him. Lord Ganesh is said to be the Lord who can remove all obstructions from one's path to success. Hence his worship on Sankat Chauth. It is believed that keeping fast on this day ensures trouble-free year ahead.

Diwali, the festival of lights is celebrated all over India but in the Mithilanchal region of India, in Bihar Diwali marks the beginning of a series of fun and festivities. Mithilanchal, often referred to as the cultural capital of the state of Bihar,has the population of over 4 crore most of them though are not very rich and they have to hunt livelihood mostly in other parts of India, but their traditional ties are very strong, they are contented and loving by nature, are God-fearing and soft-spoken. Maithili is the main language but Bajjika and Bhojpuri are also spoken. The qualitative picture of the region is well-depicted by a Maithili poet:

"Pag-pag pokhar machh makhan
Saras bol muski mukh paan
Vidya vaibhav shanti pratik
Saras kshetra Mithilanchal theek."

(On every step you will find ponds of water. People are fond of fish and makhana, produce of a water plant used in making tasty milky dish. They speak sweetly and like to chew 'paan' (betel leaf). Thus, Mithilanchal that abounds in learning and is the symbol of peace is an enjoyable region.)

Though festivals are celebrated in every part of the world and more lusciously in India, but people of Mithila celebrate from their hearts. Sitamarhi is an important place of this region and apart from this district town where Sita, the wife of Lord Rama, was born there is another important place in vicinity, i.e. Janakpur, where Lord Rama married Sita.

Diwali begins in the villages of this area with great festivity. Modernization has changed the way Diwali is celebrated in towns and cities where electric lights have devoured the traditional beauty of the earthen pots and excessive use of crackers and pollution-making fireworks has taken the place of customary norms conducive to socialization. In towns, Diwali is a show of prosperity and Laxmi is the fondest goddess of the people. However, in the villages of Mithila, I hardly found anyone caring for Laxmi. Rather Hanuman, the god associated with strength and wisdom, ruled the scene. Many days before Diwali actually takes place, the villagers involve themselves in making 'Hanumanji ka Jhanda', i.e. the flag of Hanuman. And this is not just a simple flag of a bamboo with a red cloth on the tip. It rather resembles a blending of a mobile temple and flag. Bamboo sticks and light wood or canes are carefully made into frame-like pieces, colorful papers are pasted and shining metals and glass studded on them to give the frames a beautiful, dazzling look, the image of Hanuman reposed in the lower main frame and then all the frames joined together in a vertical order so that it becomes a 'tower' as high as 25 meter. Thus, Hanumanji ka Jhanda is ready. On Diwali night, these 'jhandas' or flags are taken out in a procession.

Such processions are taken out from all the villages of a cluster and they meet at a junction place, normally any famous temple of lord Hanuman in the cluster, where all the 'jhandas' are brought together a place. Drums beat, folk dancers - all men and women - go on their swing, reverberating slogans of "Jai Ho" (may lord Hanuman be victorious) together with the sounds of dholaks and trumpets turn the whole atmosphere as if all were in a battle-field. Youths brandish their swords, participate in 'kushti' (dual
fight), display their strength and skills in several ways, all join together and greet one another collectively with "Jai ho, jai ho" and then go back to their respective villages while 'Hanumanji ka Jhanda' will now rest at that sacred spot till next year.

The spirit of unity and collectivity, of bravery and gallantry is remarkable and one will be really fascinated that high and low, rich and poor, men and women all dance and sing together with utmost hilarity. When I came back from this joyous function and saw the whole village glimmering in the starry light of 'deeyas' (earthen pots with ghee or oil burnt in Diwali nights) I could feel the difference between the town and the village, between those who craved for Laxmi and those who loved Hanuman.

Two days after Diwali, Bhaidooj is celebrated. This is the festival symbolizing a sister's love for her brother and is also known as Bhratri Dwitiya and Govardhan Pooja. Rakshabandhan is all over known as festival of fraternal love but Bhaidooj is observed only in some parts of North India and particularly in this North-Western Mithilanchal region. The association of 'Hanumanji ka Jhanda' with Diwali is also a typical feature only of this area and cannot be observed in any other part of India. While on Rakshabandhan, sisters tie a silky 'rakhi' on the wrist of their brothers and it is expected of brothers that they will safeguard their sisters, Bhaidooj is a festival when sisters pray for the strength and long life of their brothers. Instead of a silky 'rakhi', beads of raw cotton are tied on the brother's wrist. Sisters ask their brothers to eat, apart from sweets, three symbolic things: coconut, nut and a corn named 'vajri'. These are hard-shelled edibles and especially 'vajri' is very hard to chew.

The implied meaning is that the sisters wish their brothers to be as strong as nut and like a 'vajra' (fatal mythological weapon of Indra, the god of rains). Unless brothers are strong how can they safeguard their sisters? So, Bhaidooj is, in fact, other part of the coin and a supplement to Rakshabandhan. On this same day, Govardhan Pooja is also celebrated. This is an important festival for the farmers perhaps associated with the joy of reaping sugarcane, wheat and other important crops of winter. However, a mythological link goes to the days of Lord Krishna when He saved His friendly 'Gops' (milkmen) from the wrath of Indra, the god of rains, and picked up the mountain of Govardhan like an overshadowing umbrella under which all the cows and milkmen assembled and rescued from the torrents of rain. This mythological story itself has a grave meaning inside and similar stories, in different forms, are found in the scriptures of all the great religions.

For example, the story of Noah is well-known to Christians. The overall essence is that those who seek shelter in the provisions of God are saved. Thus, Govardhan Pooja is also a symbolic submission to the will of God and, in practical terms, the farmers express their happiness over the harvest they have reaped - be it sound or poor, they are content that God granted them what was their share. Cows and oxen, the closest friends of the farmers of Indian village, receive special attention on this day. Their horns are painted, colors applied to their bodies and generally they are given a break of rest on this day as homage to their tireless labor.

Another significant celebration underlining the sisters' love for their brothers is "Shama-Chakeva". Starting some days after Diwali, Shama-Chakeva is rather a traditional game which lasts for over a fortnight. For a girl or women living in towns, this game perhaps will seem like a babies' game with dolls but I found it meaningful. In a village set-up, there are joint families still surviving in most rural areas. And then there are neighboring families. Girls and women relieved from their daily toils and routine work, gather in the evening and sit in a circle, light a lamp and sing songs remembering their brothers. They play with the images of Shama and Chakeva. Chakeva is the brother and the sister's name in the game is Khirlich. Shama is Chakeva's elder brother's wife. A villain is also present named 'Chugla' who backbites and tries to raise barrier between the pious love of the brother and the sister but the reality is revealed and 'Chugla' gains nothing. As a punishment to 'Chugla', his long moustache is burnt with the burning lamp bit by bit. On the fifteenth day, his moustache would completely vanish leaving a burning mark and with this the traditional game of Shama-Chakeva is over.

The songs sung during this game reveal many truths and realities and underline the sisters' selfless love for the brothers. In the songs, they reveal their grief of separation as the brother is earning his livelihood in a remote part and does not come often to meet his sister, as the sister is tortured by the step-mother and even exploited by the brother's wife and only her brother can understand her plight, as the sister is married and now going far, far away from her brother and inviting him to come and meet her frequently. Their are solemn, deep emotions in the songs of 'Shama-Chakeva' whose in-depth implications can be understood only by those who are familiar with the Indian village set-up, situation of families, their problems and conflicts and, amidst all these, the holy bond of friendship and understanding between a brother and a sister.

On the sixth and seventh days of Diwali, there is a mega festival celebrated and this is not celebrated only in Mithilanchal but in the whole of Bihar with great honor and sense of sanctity and even in some parts of the neighboring state of Uttar Pradesh. This festival is known as "Chhath" (i.e. the sixth day festival). Chhath is an old festival and, I feel, festival is a wrong word for it and undermines its sanctity. It is the worship of Sun god. The worship of Sun is believed to be introduced in India by a sect of Brahmins known as 'Mags' or Shakdweepis. Migrated from the ancient island of Shaka at the invitation of Lord Krishna, the 'Mags' were the scholars of Ayurveda and believed in the material and spiritual power of the Sun as the source of all healing. Chhath is celebrated in two parts: on the sixth day, homage is paid to the evening sun. A proverb goes very well that everyone worships the rising Sun, that is, everyone bows down before one who is gaining influence. Chhath is the only festival or adoration in which the setting Sun is worshipped first. On the next day morning, homage is paid to the rising Sun. Winter starts in India around this time and rivers and ponds are clean and scenic. From every aspect, this is a very favorable season and quite conducive to cheerfulness. Men and women take the 'vrata' (vow) of Chhath, for three days they refrain from anything supposed to be contrary to piety, they fast and eat only some fruits and on the day of worship they stand for hours in deep water facing the Sun and praying and offering water to the Sun in adoration. As the water is cold in this season, it is very difficult to stand for so many hours but Chhath demands sacrifice and one has to face these hardships radiantly and cheerfully. As for children, it is always a fun for them to watch their mothers baking sweet cakes and other palatable things and washing the fruits but they have to take heart as they cannot even touch anything until the offer is made to Sun god. What are they? Even the parrots are afraid and they cannot partake from the fruits before Chhath lest the Sun god will be angry. In a beautiful song of Chhath, the vower sings:

"Uje kelba phar le ghaud me o pe suga mandraye
Uje khabari janaibo Suruj se suga delo juthiaye
Uje marbau re sugba dhanush se sugga gire murjhaye".

(See the bananas fructified on the tree in a big bunch, a parrot is hovering over to partake of it. Refrain, O Parrot! or I will inform about this to the Sun God. He will shoot you with His bow and arrow and you will fall down senseless). Such a deep sense of sanctity surrounds this highly significant worship.

Akbar always had a deep respect towards the talents & knowledge of Phalit Jyotish,so he had invited, in his Darbar, the most talented & well-versed Maithil pandits from Bihar.These pandits lived happily & respectfully in the regime of Akbar which continued and gradually decreased in Jahangir's and then till Shahjahan's rule.In the meantime, these pandits got cutt off from their basic origin i.e. Bihar.Then afterwards in the reign of Aurangzeb these once respectful pandits were treated unrespectfully and were tortured. They were forced to accept Islam by Aurangzeb.Among them who dared to oppose this were brutually killed while all the others had to fled away to distant villages to save their lives. Since then they are living in Agra, Aligarh, Mathura & distant villages and started calling themselves "BRAJASTHA MAITHIL BRAHMAN" as a new identity.Even after so many years the fear of Aurangzeb is still there in the un-conscious mind of them.Due to this fear some of the Maithils have even changed their surname to "SHARMA" which is a local brahmin surname.Brajastha Maithil Brahmans have little connections with their own origin Bihar's Maithil Brahmins.Even after changing their surname to "SHARMA" local brahmins too had little affinity with them. This migration information is also depicted in Akbar's autobiography "EIN-E-AKBARI".

Origin of Maithil Brahamanas

Uttarakanda of Valmiki Ramayana gives a detailed story of the origin of Maithil Brāhamanas.The King Nimi started a great yajna in which he invited rishi Vasiṣṭhafor performing this yajna. Vasiṣṭha accepted but was busy in another yajna for a long time and therefore could not come in time. In the meantime, King Nimi asked the rishi (sage) Gotama to perform the yajna.Mant other rishis were also invited. When Vasiṣṭha came and saw that the yajna was over, he cursed Nimi to live without body. Nimi retorted with a similar curse.By the blessings of his father Brahma, Vasiṣṭha was reborn in a kumbha (pitcher). Bhrigu and other sages asked the bodyless king Nimi whether he wanted to get a body, but Nimi refused and said he wanted to live in the 'pupils'(eyelids, Nimi) of people.Then Nimi's body was churned and a man was created, who came to be called Videha because he was born of a father who had no body (deha), and was also called Maithil because be was produced by churning (manthana).All the present gotras of Maithils are said to start from the sages who participated in the great yajna of Nimi.Yajnayalkya lived in Mithila (according to Brihadaranyaka Upanishada) and proponents of India's six philosophies also lived herew, including Gotama (Nyaya), Kapil(Samkhya),etc. Buddhism was widespread here.Later Udyotkata, Kumarila Bhatta, Mandana Mishra, Prabhakara, Udayanacharya, Gangesh, Pakshadhara Mishra, etc reestablished the Vedic religion by defeating Buddhists in debates.

According to D.D. Kosāmbi, Śatpath Brāhmana tells that Māthava Videgha, led by his priest Gotama Rahugana, was the first king who originally lived in the land of Sarasvati crossed Sadānirā (supposed to be Gandaka) and founded a kingdom, where the people named videhas lived at the time of composition of Śatpath Brāhmana. Gotama Rahugana was a vedic rishi who composed many hymns of the first mandala of Rgveda. Most notable Rgvedic hymns of Gotama Rahugana are those which praise Sva-rājya, which was indisputably the State of Videgha which later became Videha due to phonetic change. Māthava Videgha, therefore, must belong to the Rgvedic period and must have preceded the period of Śatpath Brāhmana by a considerable gap. Rgveda also mentions hymns by Kāśirāja Pratardana in tenth mandala. Hence, Mithilā and Kāśhi formed part of the region in which Rgvedic peoples lived. Descendandants of Gotama Rahugana were called Gautama. One such sage lived near Ahilya-sthāna during the age of Rāmāyana.

The Mithila Khanda of Visnu purana defines the traditional boundaries of Mithila As Kosi in the East, Gandaki or Gandaka in the west, Himalaya in the North and Gangā (Ganges) in the south, measuring 24 yojanas (1 yojana measured 12.52 Kilometres in 550AD according to Panchsiddantika east-west and 16 yojanas north-south . But now many districts south of Gangā are also included in Mithila by dint of being the region of Maithili language as well as of Maithil Brāhamanas. Mithila is the traditional region associated with Maithil Brāhamanas, but a large number of Maithil Brāhamanas have been living in various parts of Madhya Pradesh (esp. Māndla region) and Chhattisagarh states for millennia.

Maithil Brahmins ( Brāhamaṇas is the correct Sanskrit term) form part of ancient Vedic Brahmins. Maithil Brāhamaṇas are a part of Panch-gauda Pañchgauḍa , a group of highest ranking castesamong Brahmins, who still strive to follow rites and rituals according to ancient Hindu canons. Maithil Brahmin is a community of highly cohesive, and traditional Brahmins. They are reputated for orthodoxy and interest in learning.Most of them live in and around Mithila, which is a portion of North Bihar and few districts of South-east Bihar up to Godda and Deoghar in Jharkhand of India plus adjoining Terai regions ofNepal. Mithila was the name of capital of the ancient kingdom of legendary King Janak. Most of them are Śāktas (worshippers of Śakti) and love fish, Choora-dahi, Mangoes and discussions and debate.Maithili is their mother tongue, though many use Angika (a southern variant of Maithili) as their mother tongue.

They have four hierarchically ordered divisions: Śrotiya, Yogya or Joga, Panji (Pāinj in Maithili) and Jayawāra (which can be divided into Grihastha and Vamśa according to some scholars).They have no further endogamous divisions but observe a complicated rules for marriage, each of these four divisions may take a wife from the group below it.
