We often hear that Maithili films are now all set to give the Bhojpuri film industry a run for its money. That's a tall claim because Bhojpuri Films have now grown really very big.Maithili films are nowhere in the comparison.
The latest Maithili Film, Senuriya (vermilion),a two-and-a-half hour film, made at a cost of Rs 3 crore by Ayushman Films, directed by B.D. Prasad Chaudhary went largely unnoticed.
The first Maithili movie was Kanyadan (released in 1965 and directed by Phani Majumdar) of which a significant portion was made in the Maithili language. In the film, the protagonist did not know the Maithili language but decided to learn Maithili as his wife knew that language only.”
Another Maithili movie Mamta Gaave Geet was released in the 1970s and became very popular due to its melodious songs and good storyline.
The reasons put forward by many for Maithili cinema not being as popular as Bhojpuri cinema is that most of the filmmakers do not understand the soul of the Maithil culture as they are born and brought up outside Mithila. On several occasions, dialogue writers fail to use the right kind of Maithili dialogues according to the situations in the film and they try to push Hindi words as fillers. If such things can be avoided, then would not be any obstacle in the success of Maithili films.”

The music director of Senuriya, Gyaneshwar Dubey, had claimed rather audaciously that: “The film will usher a revolution to the minds of the people of Bihar as it is based on the exploitation on women in India. Good films always work despite all odds. What is commendable is that Maithili films are made with meagre budget but things have changed now. There are people who want to spent money on regional cinema also. This film will break the belief that only Bhojpuri films can make differences. Many Maithili films have done good business in the past like Sindurdan and Ek Chutki Sindur.”

But nobody can deny the fact that Maithili Cinema has a bright future ahead as the audience have started enjoying the film made in their very own lovely language.
